Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is in talks to join Serie A side Genoa on a free transfer as he has been a free agent for over a year now, reported The Athletic on Sunday.

De Gea, who joined the Red Devils in 2011 as a 20-year-old, left the club after 12 years as the 20-time Premier League decided against extending his contract.

The Spaniard has offers from Saudi Pro League, the United States and Italy and he has decided to resume his football career in Italy after remaining on the sidelines for over a year.

Genoa recently sold their goalkeeper Josep Martinez and they are now looking for a new shot-stopper. With the starting place a guarantee, De Gea will finalise the deal with the club in the coming days.

The 33-year-old left the club as a legend. He played 545 games for the Red Devils and kept 190 clean sheets in the process.

He also guided Man United to their last PL title in 2013 where he only conceded 26 goals in 28 matches and also kept 11 clean sheets.

Not just that, the 33-year-old — despite having his bad moments — won the PL Golden Glove last season with 16 clean sheets throughout the season over the likes of Man City’s Ederson and Liverpool’s Alisson.

That was the second time the Spaniard won that award in his PL career. His first accolade came in the 2017/18 season under the manager Jose Mourinho when he kept 18 clean sheets while conceding only 28 goals in 37 league games.

De Gea won eight trophies with the Manchester club including a PL title, UEFA Europa League and FA Cup.
