India registered a 43-run win over Sri Lanka in the T20I series opener at Kandy's Pallekele on Saturday.
Suryakumar Yadav and his men restricted the hosts for 170 after scoring 213/7.
Earlier, new skipper Yadav struck an aggressive half-century as India crossed 200 after being asked to bat.
Suryakumar smashed 58 off 26 balls which included two sixes and eight fours. He forged a crucial partnership of 76 with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who scored 49.
Fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana claimed four wickets, including those of Suryakumar and Pant, but couldn't prevent India from surpassing 200 after a subpar fielding performance by the home side.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 40 off 21 balls, and Shubman Gill, who hit 34, provided India with an explosive start, putting on 74 in the first six overs.
The openers fell in the space of two deliveries, with Dilshan Madushanka dismissing Gill and leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga having the left-handed Jaiswal stumped off his first ball.
Suryakumar stabilised the innings and attacked the opposition with eight fours and two sixes in his partnership with the left-handed Pant.
Pathirana, dubbed "Baby Malinga" for his slinging action and yorkers reminiscent of former Sri Lanka quick Lasith Malinga, trapped Suryakumar lbw after the batsman's 22-ball fifty.
Pathirana then bowled Pandya and Pant.
In reply, Sri Lanka made a brisk start to the run chase and at oen time they were cruising with Pathum Nissanka leading the charge.
Kusal Mendis stroked 27-ball 45 before being dismissed by Arshdeep Singh. Kusal Perera was the second man to depart on team's total of 140 while Nissanka departed soon after.
He made 48-ball 79 with the help of four sixes and seven fours.
Sri Lanka's innings crumbled as they lost seven wickets in just 12 runs.
Riyan Parag bagged three wickets for just five runs whereas Arshdeep and Axar Patel picked two each.
The second match of the series will take place at the same venue.
