Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott expressed that his side is capable of taking on any team as the Afghans continue their high flight in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 with three out of three wins.
Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan, defeated Papua New Guinea in yet another one-sided encounter as they bowled out the opposition for just 95 runs while bowling first and ended up chasing the target in 15.1 overs on the loss of three wickets.
With the win, the Afghans secured their place in the T20 World Cup Super 8, their maiden last-eight berth in history.
“I believe we’re very, very talented and when we play our best cricket, we can take on anyone. We’ve seen that,” Trott said after the match against Papua New Guinea.
“I feel that we still haven’t played our best game. There’s still things we need to work on and we’ll be working on those over the next few days to give ourselves the best chance to beat the major teams,” Trott said.
He also added that despite Afghanistan playing very well and winning matches, they have not achieved anything yet.
“We still have one game left, an important group game, and that’s going to be a good gauge of where we are against a powerful West Indies side who won an incredible game last night (against New Zealand) from the position they were in,” he added.
“So, it’s nice to have won tonight and got qualification as such. To come to a World Cup and win three is a nice feeling, but also the realisation and reality that we haven’t won anything yet.
“We only achieved the group stage and we’ve got some important cricket matches coming up which we’re going to have to play well in.”
Afghanistan and the West Indies are the two teams that are going through from Group C into the Super 8. PNG, Nepal and New Zealand are out of the tournament.
