India’s young opener Abhishek Sharma bagged a record after scoring an explosive century in the second T20I against Zimbabwe which is being played at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday.
Sharma, who announced himself to the world with his blistering knocks in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, became the fastest Indian player to score a century for India in T20I cricket in terms of innings.
He surpassed Deepak Hooda (three innings) and KL Rahul (four innings) to become the fastest to achieve the milestone.
The left-handed batter completed his century with three consecutive sixes, scoring the first 50 runs in 33 balls and the remaining 50 in just 13.
Abhishek, 23 years and 307 days, joined an elite list of Indian batters to score a century in T20Is at a young age. He is just behind Suresh Raina (23 years, 156 days), Shubman Gill (23 years, 146 days) and Yashashvi Jaiswal (21 years, 279 days) as the youngest Indian batter to score a century.
Furthermore, he also became the fourth fastest Indian batter to score a T20I century after Rohit Sharma (35 balls), Suryakumar Yadav (45), KL Rahul (46).
Earlier today, India won the toss and opted to bat first.
"Going to bat first, the same wicket as yesterday. The best opportunity for us to bat. Looks dry, it's a nice sunny day. Need to improve our batting, Sudharsan comes in for Khaleel," Gill said after winning the toss.
Zimbabwe skipper Sikandar Raza stated that the wicket would provide more assistance to batters so he would have bowled first had he won the toss.
"Looks like a summer wicket, the pitch will get better. We wanted to bowl first anyway. The changing room is relaxed and happy. Taking one game at a time, we are here for a reason, will try to get our job done. Blessing has been good, Chatara delivers for us. He has come right more often than not for the team," Raza said.
