Former Indian captain Kapil Dev on Monday, said ‘it is too early’ for right-arm pacer Jasprit Bumrah to replace Rohit Sharma as the Indian team captain, stating he should play more cricket.
Following India’s humiliating 10-wicket defeat against Australia in the recently-concluded second Test on Friday, Sharma’s future as the captain has come under scrutiny with fans demanding him to be replaced by Bumrah, who led the men in blue to a historic 295-run defeat in the series opener in Perth.
However, the World Cup-winning captain Kapil believes it would be a hasty decision to make the pacer captain and urged that a player must be judged on how one reacts in pressure situations.
“I think it is too early to talk about that. With one performance, you can't say he is one of the best, and with one bad performance, you can't say he doesn't deserve that. Let the player play a lot of cricket. There will be ups and downs. Then you will judge how he reacts during difficult times,” Kapil said.
“When he is down and out like Virat Kohli was, one of the best cricketers we have seen in our country, he is among the top four batters in the country so if he (Rohit Sharma) is going through a rough time, it is only up to him how fast he can bounce back and come back," he added.
The former all-rounder further expressed his firm believe in the touring side’s ability to bounce back, stating, "Yes, they will come back”.
The third Test of the five-match series between Australia and India is scheduled to be played in Brisbane between December 14 and 18.
