England’s midfielder Jude Bellingham was confident that the Three Lions will win the championship in the future after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain in Berlin.
Spain scored just at the start of the second half with Nico Williams finding the back of the net but England’s substitute, Cole Palmer equalised with a long-range goal.
However, Mikel Oyarzabal’s 86th-minute strike ended England’s hopes of lifting the title as Spain emerged victorious at Euro after 12 years.
Talking after the match, Bellingham, who was one of seven England players aged 25 or under, admitted that the English team was young before adding that he is confident that the Three Lions can win it in future.
“It’s a young team – a lot of potential. I know people will be frustrated that we haven’t delivered yet but I definitely feel it is coming,” Bellingham said after the final.
“To be sucker-punched with the late goal, it’s heartbreaking,” he said. “We all wanted nothing more than to make history and to make the people of England proud and we didn’t quite deliver.
“It’s a young group still and it’s really disappointing because at some point we do have to deliver but there are experiences we can take from this tournament … The thing is about this team – and we showed it throughout – is that we’re never going to quit.”
Bellingham, who won the Champions League with Madrid last season, will begin his season with Los Blancos in the coming weeks and will also be participating in the new and expanded Club World Cup format. He admitted that the crazy schedules are taking a toll on players’ mental and physical well-being.
“We sacrificed a lot throughout the last weeks,” he said. “It’s so tough with crazy schedules and then coming together for the end of the season for one last tournament. It’s difficult on the body – mentally and physically you are exhausted. But for our country we wanted to give everything. To lose in that way is really cruel.”
