KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to bring back the Yo-Yo test to improve the fitness of the players nationwide, Geo News reported.

According to details, the Yo-Yo test was not being conducted in recent past but now Director of Domestic Cricket, Khurram Niazi, has approved a plan to improve fitness.

As per the plan, fitness tests will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, fitness tests will be conducted nationwide from July 11.

Fitness tests will first be conducted at the district level, followed by the regional level.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has approved the fitness plan as well.

Players who fail the fitness tests will be dropped not only from the national team but also from regional teams.

Niazi has made regional contracts and team selection conditional on passing fitness tests.

Test cricketers, international cricketers, and national cricketers must pass all fitness tests, including the Yo-Yo test.

What is the Yo-Yo Test?

The Yo-Yo test is a variation of the Beep test, a running aerobic fitness assessment that involves running between two sets of cones positioned 20 metres apart (incidentally, the length of a cricket pitch).

Upon the sound of a beep, a player must reach the cone on the opposite side by the time the next beep sounds. The player then has to return to the initial cone before the third beep sounds. Completing this return trip marks the completion of a shuttle.

There is a seven-second recovery period between each shuttle. As the level of each shuttle increases, the benchmark duration for completing the shuttle decreases. Additionally, the number of shuttles per level also increases, although not in a linear fashion, leading to an increase in running speed.

The test begins at level 5, which consists of one shuttle. Level 11 has two shuttles, and so on, becoming progressively more challenging. The highest level is 23.

A player's test ends once they miss two beeps. The process is software-based, and the results are recorded.

Remember, former Pakistan team director Mohammad Hafeez had revealed that previous management which included Mickey Arthur and Grant Bradburn decided to exclude fitness tests.

While talking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Hafeez mentioned a conversation with the team's trainer where he was disappointed with the trainer's adherence to directives from previous management regarding fitness standards.
