West Indies captain Rovman Powell is confident that his team will make a comeback in their remaining T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 matches after suffering an eight-wicket loss against England at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.
West Indies posted an 181-run target which the English side had no trouble in chasing as Phil Salt (87 off 47) and Jonny Bairstow (48 off 26) guided the defending champions home in 17.3 overs.
Powell believed that if their bowlers had bowled a bit better then they could have defended the target.
"Nah, the halfway stage we think that 180 is a fighting total, we knew that if we bowled well, we could have defended 180," Powell said after the match.
"I think when you're selecting a team and you have players that are playing good you will always have to make the tough decision. We sit down as a selection group and think this that the team that played today is our better team to face England and it just didn't work out tonight."
He then added that West Indies’ destiny is still in their hands as they will now face the United States (USA) and then South Africa in their remaining Super 8 matches.
"I think our destiny is still in our own hands. It's just for us to continue to play good cricket. And once we do that, we think we'll be OK."
"Just sit here and tell you that we will have tweaks, we will have changes for the next game, it's a difficult one. We still think that the guys that took the field tonight was the right guys that took the field. But those things do happen. England played a very good game of cricket tonight," Powell added.
