CAPE TOWN: South Africa’s wicketkeeper batter Heinrich Klaasen has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for kicking the stumps during the second ODI against Pakistan on Thursday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced.
According to the apex cricketing body, Klaasen was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players Support Personnel, which pertains to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international Match.”
The incident occurred on the eventual last ball of the match, which saw the 33-year-old getting dismissed by Naseem Shah.
Klaasen, who fell agonizingly short of his century, expressed frustration over the dismissal by kicking the stumps.
In addition to the financial penalty, one demerit point has been added to Klaasen’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in the last 24 months.
The right-handed batter admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Match Referee Richie Richardson, negating the need for a formal hearing.
On-field umpires Alex Wharf and Lubabalo Gcuma, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Allahuddien Palekar levelled the charge.
It is pertinent to mention that South Africa faced an 81-run defeat in the second ODI against Pakistan.
The victory gave Pakistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, with the final ODI scheduled to be played in Johannesburg on Sunday.
